Short term wind energy forecasting system: GH Forecaster

GH Forecaster provides short term power forecasts for wind farms predicting from the next few hours to a week into the future. The model has been well validated using operational data from wind farms in a range of terrain types and wind regimes.

GH is trusted to deliver accurate forecasting services for commercial clients in a growing number of countries. The regularly updated predictions are relied upon for participation in energy markets or for energy scheduling.

The adaptable modelling methods have proven accurate in a range of terrain types and wind regimes, resulting in the potential for:
• Improved market trading
• Optimised scheduled maintenance
• Enhanced plant scheduling by system operators
A study published at EWEC 2006, in Athens, showed the potential benefit of using GH Forecaster predictions, compared to no predictions, to be an increase in the traded value of wind energy of the order of £8/MWh

GH Forecaster adopts a combined physical/statistical approach. The method utilises weather model inputs from a number of approved suppliers and enhances this data to the site-specific conditions. The refinement of the weather model input and conversion to wind farm power is achieved through the application of high resolution models accounting for the topography and turbine wake effects, and through statistical routines that “learn” using feedback from the site.

GH Forecaster services are currently being provided for over 7.5 GW of installed wind capacity, in 10 countries, covering 4 continents around the world. GH’s global experience and wind farm expertise combined with weather data from local and global weather providers has proved successful all around the world.
